Each year on the evening of the Captains Trophy event, a dinner is held. It is one of two formal dinners - the other being the President's Dinner which was held earlier in the year. Some photographs from the evening can be seen below.
The Captains Trophy dinner was held in the clubhouse on Saturday night. The Samuel Horden Room is the main function room in the club and comfortably holds 80 people. The tradition is that previous Captains are invited to form tables - 8 Captains, past and present, attended the dinner. The room was decorated by Jan & Warwick Lane and my wife, Wendy. It looked spectacular. Board member Bob Kemp was the MC and the loyal toast was given by past Captain and past President Brian Lamb. Our Patron, Don Barsby, was unable to attend the evening and nominated Brian. Brian Hanrahan proposed the toast to Captains past and present and gave an eloquent and amusing speech. I replied, beginning with a quote from Lord Reading where he urged brevity in speeches - he said " Always be shorter than anyone dared to hope".
The evening started with drinks and canapes served in the John Oxley Room with the beautiful voice of Bronwyn Kenny singing a medley of songs accompanied by Mark Dabin. The main course was served followed by dessert and dessert wine, coffee and chocolates. The dinner provided by the Phatt Duck and his team was of the absolute highest quality and the acolades were universal. It was a wonderful evening.
Members are reminded that a maximum of two balls are permitted when they play a practice round on the course. Sand buckets must be carried at all times.
AND ... just in case you are wondering
'Captains Trophy' I have used 'Captains' without an apostrophe - ie in the adjectively use of the pural. As the Sydney Morning Herald says from time to time 'this correspondance is now closed'
